St. Gilgen is located at the northwestern end of Lake Wolfgangsee and is often referred to as the 'Mozart Village', although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself never visited. However, his mother Anna Maria was born here, and his sister 'Nannerl' lived in the village for many years. The baroque town hall and the Mozart memorial site characterize the town's appearance. St. Gilgen combines sophisticated flair with Alpine tradition. A major attraction is the Zwölferhorn cable car, which whisks visitors to 1,522 meters in just a few minutes, offering spectacular views over Lake Wolfgangsee and the surrounding mountains. The town is also a popular starting point for hiking and water sports. Access is via the B158 Wolfgangsee federal road from Salzburg (about 30 minutes). In winter, St. Gilgen is part of the romantic Wolfgangsee Advent.
