Liezen serves as the capital of Austria's largest district by area and is centrally located in the Enns Valley of Styria. The town developed at a historically vital transport junction where the salt route from the Salzkammergut met the north-south alpine transit route. First documented in 1074 as 'Luezen', its modern expansion was triggered by industrialization in the 19th century. For a long time, the local ironworks were a dominant economic factor, driving much of the town's growth. Today, Liezen acts primarily as a service and retail hub for the entire middle Enns Valley and is a significant administrative center. Framed by the imposing peaks of the Ennstal Alps and the Totes Gebirge, the town also provides a wide range of opportunities for outdoor activities and alpine tourism.
