Enns is located in the Upper Austrian central region directly at the confluence of the Enns and Danube rivers and claims the title of Austria's oldest city, based on city rights granted in 1212. However, the town's history dates back much further to Roman times, when Lauriacum was one of the most important legionary sites along the Danube Limes. Today, visitors can admire the rich archaeological finds of this era at the Museum Lauriacum. The city's unmistakable landmark is the 60-meter-high Enns City Tower, which rises free-standing in the middle of the main square and once served as a watchtower and bell tower. The medieval structure of the old town, with its narrow streets, burgher houses, and remnants of the city fortifications, remains well-preserved to this day. Geographically, Enns constitutes an important transport hub and port location on the Danube. The economy is characterized by a mix of industry, trade, and growing cultural tourism. Culturally, Enns is known as Austria's first Cittaslow city, an award for cities committed to conscious deceleration and a high quality of life. The Basilica of St. Lawrence, built over Roman foundations, is another significant structure and a center of spirituality in the region. In the surrounding area, the Danube meadows and numerous cycling paths, such as the Danube Cycle Path and the Enns Cycle Path, invite sports activities. Enns masterfully combines its ancient Roman heritage with medieval splendor and modern concepts for sustainable urban living.
