Attnang-Puchheim is a city in the Vöcklabruck district of Upper Austria, owing its significance primarily to the railway. Geographically, it is located in the Hausruckviertel at the confluence of the Vöckla and Ager rivers. The city's history is shaped by the fusion of the formerly independent towns of Attnang and Puchheim. While Puchheim is known for its castle and the magnificent Maria Puchheim pilgrimage basilica of the Redemptorists, Attnang developed into a central transport hub with the opening of the Westbahn. The town gained tragic fame at the end of World War II when, due to its strategic railway importance, it became the target of massive bombings and was almost completely destroyed. Reconstruction turned Attnang-Puchheim into a modern city with a strong service and trade orientation. Today, the railway station serves as an important transfer point between the Westbahn and the Salzkammergut Railway. Culturally, the city features a variety of events at the Phönix Hall and is heavily involved in regional development. Attnang-Puchheim combines the industrial charm of a railway junction with the historical heritage of Puchheim Castle, forming an economic backbone in the Upper Austrian central region.
