Hallstatt is located in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria on the shores of Lake Hallstatt and is the center of the namesake Hallstatt culture. The village has a history of salt mining spanning over 7,000 years, with the local salt mine considered the oldest in the world. Archaeological finds from the burial ground in the high valley led to the definition of a distinct epoch of the early Iron Age. Due to its extraordinary combination of natural landscape and human settlement activity, the region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997. The dense construction on the narrow shoreline and the terraced houses characterize the village's distinctive appearance. Significant sights include the Ossuary, which houses over 1,200 painted skulls, and the lakeside Evangelical Church. Today, the village attracts millions of visitors annually and serves as a prime example of alpine cultural tourism.
