Neudegg Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Neudegg castle ruins are located in the photogenic Pulkau valley in Lower Austria and were once the ancestral seat of the Lords of Neudegg. The complex was built around 1180 to secure the border against Moravia and control the regional wine trade. The castle sat atop a steep rocky spur, granting it an excellent defensive position. During the 14th century, the site was expanded, but it began to decay noticeably from the late 15th century onward as the owners moved to more comfortable estates in the valley. During the Thirty Years' War, the already dilapidated ruin suffered further damage. Today, impressive remains of the keep and the curtain wall are still preserved, documenting its former defensibility. The ruins stand as a testament to the changing knightly lifestyle of the Late Middle Ages and represent a significant architectural monument in the Waldviertel region.
