Scharfstein Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Scharfstein Castle ruins are located on a rocky outcrop in the Dunkelsteinerwald, not far from the Danube in Lower Austria. It was presumably built in the 12th century by the Kuenringers and served as an important control station over the transport routes of the region. The first documented mention occurred in 1180 under the name 'Scharfstein'. The castle was characterized by its difficult-to-capture location and massive walls, of which remains of the keep and the curtain wall are still visible today. During noble feuds in the 15th century, particularly in 1460, the fortress was severely damaged and eventually abandoned to decay. Since the castle was never rebuilt, its medieval character has remained largely unadulterated in the ruin structure. Today, the ruins are a popular destination for hikers, offering wide views over the Waldviertel and the adjacent Wachau from the remaining walls.
