Scharfeneck Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Scharfeneck castle ruins are hidden in the forested slopes of the Leitha Mountains near Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge in Lower Austria. The complex was built towards the end of the 14th century and primarily served to control the borders between the Duchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary. Its construction history is particularly noteworthy, as Scharfeneck was reinforced and expanded in the 15th century under the reign of Emperor Frederick III. The castle is characterized by its square ground plan and the remains of a massive residential tower, which are still recognizable today. Despite its strategic importance, the castle was abandoned and left to decay following the destruction during the first Turkish siege in 1529. Today, the ruins are a quiet excursion destination for history buffs who want to explore the late Gothic architectural elements and thick stone walls amidst nature. A local association actively works to secure the remaining building structure.
