Peilstein Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Peilstein castle ruins are located near Sankt Leonhard am Forst in the Mostviertel region. The complex was constructed in the 12th century by the Counts of Peilstein, who were a prominent noble family in the region at that time. The castle served to control surrounding trade routes and administer extensive estates. Following the extinction of the Peilstein line in the 13th century, ownership changed several times, occasionally falling under provincial sovereign administration. By the 16th century, the site lost its military significance and was increasingly neglected. Documents from the 17th century already describe the castle as decaying, leading to its eventual total abandonment. Today, only sparse masonry remains of the once grand upper castle and outer bailey are visible within the dense forest. The archaeological importance of the site lies in its evidence for early High Medieval defensive architecture in Lower Austria.
