Pottendorf is located in the southern Vienna Basin near the border with Burgenland and is a significant site in Austrian industrial history. The community's development was massively influenced by the founding of the first mechanical cotton mill in the Austrian Empire in 1801 by Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy. This event marked the beginning of the industrial revolution in the region. The architectural center is Pottendorf Castle, once a magnificent baroque building set in a vast park traversed by the Fischa-Dagnitz river. Although the castle is partially in ruins today, the park remains an important local recreation area and natural monument. The parish church of Saint James the Greater, a baroque masterpiece, testifies to the cultural wealth of past centuries. Geographically, the town benefits from the flat plains of the Steinfeld, which favored the early establishment of factories. Today, Pottendorf is a growing residential community with a mix of historical heritage and modern infrastructure, well-connected via the A2 motorway and the Pottendorf railway line.
