Wiener Neustadt is a significant city in southern Lower Austria with a rich history that began in 1194, funded by the ransom paid for King Richard the Lionheart. Originally designed as a fortress city against eastern threats, it rapidly became an important ducal stronghold and eventually served as an imperial residence under Emperor Frederick III. A central landmark is the Theresian Military Academy, founded by Maria Theresa in 1751, which holds the distinction of being the world's oldest military academy. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Wiener Neustadt emerged as an industrial powerhouse, particularly in aviation and locomotive manufacturing, which unfortunately led to its near-total destruction during World War II. Following its reconstruction, the city has become a modern center for education and research, characterized today by institutions like the University of Applied Sciences and the MedAustron cancer research center.
