Kaplankyr Nature Reserve (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Kaplankyr Nature Reserve is situated in northern Turkmenistan on the Ustyurt Plateau and was established in 1979 to protect desert and semi-desert ecosystems. Spanning approximately 282,200 hectares, the reserve is distinguished by its dramatic escarpments (chinks) and isolated mesas. The climate is continental and arid, giving rise to highly specialized flora and fauna. The reserve plays a vital role in the conservation of the Saiga antelope, which utilizes the area as a wintering ground and migratory corridor. In addition to the Saiga, the territory is home to honey badgers, goitered gazelles, and the rare Turkmen caracal. Low-lying depressions within the reserve contain salt lakes and clay pans that briefly flourish after rare rainfall. Historically, the area was a significant crossroad for nomadic tribes and is located near the ancient ruins of Konye-Urgench. Scientific research in the reserve focuses on monitoring endangered species and studying soil salinization in arid zones.
