The Ustyurt Gas Chemical Complex (Surgil project) in Karakalpakstan is one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced petrochemical projects. The facility was completed in 2015 following an investment of approximately $3.9 billion and is a joint venture between Uzbekistan's Uzneftegaz and a consortium of South Korean companies, including Lotte Chemical and KOGAS. The complex processes natural gas from the Surgil fields into high-quality polyethylene and polypropylene. The construction of the plant under the extreme climatic conditions of the Ustyurt Plateau was regarded as an engineering masterpiece. Up to 4.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas are purified and processed here annually, positioning Uzbekistan as a significant exporter of polymers on the global market. The project has fundamentally transformed the industrial landscape of Western Uzbekistan and strengthened the country's technological independence in plastics production. The facility also integrates cutting-edge environmental protection technologies to minimize its ecological footprint.
