The Il-Arslan Mausoleum in Konye-Urgench is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant structures in this city in northern Turkmenistan. It was built in the second half of the 12th century for the Khwarazmian ruler Il-Arslan, who reigned from 1156 to 1172. The building is renowned for its distinctive twelve-sided conical dome, decorated with glazed turquoise bricks arranged in a zigzag pattern. Its facades feature masterfully crafted terracotta reliefs with floral and geometric motifs, which are typical of the Khwarazmian architecture of that era. The mausoleum survived the widespread destruction caused by Genghis Khan in 1221 and Timur in 1388, highlighting its exceptional structural quality. it is regarded as a precursor to later monumental funerary architecture across the Islamic world. Today, the mausoleum is part of the Konye-Urgench UNESCO World Heritage site and continues to attract visitors with its unique silhouette and delicate decorations.
