Kunya-Urgench, formerly known as Gurganj, served as the magnificent capital of the Khwarazmian Empire and was one of Central Asia's most significant cultural and political centers. Located on the northern branch of the Silk Road, the city reached its peak between the 10th and 14th centuries, attracting renowned scholars like Avicenna and al-Biruni to its prestigious academy. However, the city's history is defined by two major catastrophes: the Mongol invasion of 1221 led by Genghis Khan and the subsequent destruction by Timur in 1388, which eventually led to the shifting of the Amu Darya river and the city's abandonment. Despite these events, several architectural masterpieces remain, showcasing the exceptional brickwork and decorative arts of the Khwarazmian style. Notable structures include the 60-meter-high Kutlug Timur minaret and the intricately tiled mausoleum of Törebeg Hanym. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it stands as a testament to the sophisticated urban civilization that once flourished south of the Aral Sea.
