Gubadag, known until 1992 as Telmanovsk, is a small town of around 12,000 inhabitants in Daşoguz Region in northern Turkmenistan, about 25 kilometres north-west of the regional capital. Its former name honoured the German communist Ernst Thälmann; after independence the town reclaimed its Turkmen name Gubadag, literally Dome Hill, in reference to the shape of a nearby rise. The town is surrounded by extensive irrigated fields of the Khorezm basin and is a notable centre for cotton and wheat farming, complemented by tomatoes, watermelons and mulberry trees for silkworm rearing. Key economic facilities include a cotton ginning plant, a cottonseed oil press and a number of small agricultural cooperatives serving the surrounding district economy.
