Tekesh Mausoleum (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Tekesh Mausoleum in Konye-Urgench is a masterpiece of Khwarazmian architecture, built around the year 1200 for the Khwarazm-Shah Tekesh. Tekesh reigned from 1172 to 1200 and was instrumental in the expansion of the Khwarazmian Empire. The most striking feature of the mausoleum is its high, turquoise-glazed conical dome, which rests on a twelve-sided drum. The exterior walls are adorned with intricate brick patterns and calligraphic bands that convey religious texts. Inside, the structure impresses with its monumental height and the geometric precision of its vaults. Despite the destruction caused by Mongol troops in 1221, the mausoleum remained largely intact, testifying to the technical brilliance of the builders of that era. It is a central part of the Konye-Urgench UNESCO World Heritage site and is regarded as one of the most significant examples of funerary architecture in Central Asia.
