Köneürgenç, in the north of Daşoguz Region, is one of Central Asia's most significant historic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. The present-day town of around 35,000 people lies only a few kilometres from the Uzbek border and looks back on more than two thousand years as the former capital of the Khwarazm Empire. During its zenith under the Anushtegin dynasty in the 12th and early 13th centuries it was hailed as the heart of the Islamic Golden Age, home to scholars such as al-Biruni and al-Khwarizmi. The Mongols of Genghis Khan razed the city almost entirely in 1221, but spectacular monuments survived: the 60-metre Kutlug-Timur minaret, the mausoleum of Sultan Tekish and the tile-domed Törebeg Hanym mausoleum that crown the modern park.
