Darvaza Gas Crater (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Darvaza Gas Crater, popularly known as the 'Door to Hell', is a unique anthropogenic phenomenon located in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. It was formed in 1971 during a Soviet drilling operation searching for natural gas, when the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed into a cavern. To prevent the escape of poisonous gases, geologists decided to set the gas on fire, expecting it to burn out in a few days. Instead, the crater has been burning continuously for over five decades, providing a spectacular visual display, especially at night. The crater measures approximately 70 meters in diameter and has a depth of about 30 meters. The constant heat and blazing flames have made the site one of the most famous, albeit unofficial, tourist attractions in the country. In recent years, there have been discussions about closing the crater for ecological and economic reasons, but it remains a fascinating example of human impact on the environment.
