The Mausoleum of Törebeg Hanym in Kunya-Urgench is one of the most enigmatic and aesthetically sophisticated examples of 14th-century Islamic architecture. While traditionally identified as a tomb for a princess of the Golden Horde, scholars believe it may have originally served as a throne room or a temple. Its most remarkable feature is the interior of the dome, which is adorned with a striking mosaic of geometric patterns and stars. The 365 individual sections of the mosaic are often interpreted as an astronomical calendar representing the days of the year. The architecture reflects a fusion of Persian and Central Asian styles, showcasing the unparalleled skill of Khwarazmian tile workers. The grand portal and the delicate openings for light create a space of exceptional beauty and mathematical precision. Trotz der destruction wrought by Timur in the late 1380s, the mausoleum remains relatively well-preserved and stands as a highlight of the decorative arts within this UNESCO World Heritage site.
