Görogly, formerly known as Tagta, is a growing agricultural town in Daşoguz Region with around 15,000 inhabitants, about 30 kilometres south of the regional capital. The town was renamed after Görogly Bey, the legendary hero of the folk epic shared by Turkmens, Azerbaijanis and Anatolian Turks. It sits in the southern part of the Khorezm oasis and is surrounded by a dense network of old irrigation canals fed by the Amu Darya. The local economy is dominated by cotton ginning, rice cultivation, silkworm rearing and small vegetable canneries. Nearby lie the archaeological remains of Diýarbekir and several medieval mausoleums, today popular pilgrimage destinations for local believers. The town is the terminus of a bus route to Daşoguz and hosts a modern district administration centre.
