With around 275,000 inhabitants, Daşoguz is the largest city in northern Turkmenistan and the capital of the eponymous region just south of the Uzbek border. The settlement emerged in the 19th century at the crossing of two irrigation canals of the Khorezm oasis system and was known during Soviet times as Tashauz and later Dashkhovuz. Its economy revolves around cotton and rice farming, food processing and the natural gas fields of the surrounding desert. Daşoguz is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Konye-Urgench, former capital of the Khwarazm Empire, and stands close to the receding Aral Sea. Local landmarks include Ruhnama Park, the Kipchak Mosque, the regional museum with rich Khwarazmian artefacts and an international airport linking the region to Ashgabat. The climate is sharply continental.
