Gurbansoltan Eje is a small town of around 25,000 inhabitants in Daşoguz Region, about 30 kilometres south-west of the regional capital. It lies in an ancient irrigation oasis of the Khorezm basin and has been for centuries a centre of cotton and rice cultivation, complemented by silkworm rearing and vegetable gardens. Until 1992 it was called Yylanly, then briefly Yzmukshyr, before being renamed after the mother of Turkmenistan's first president Saparmyrat Nyýazow. The town was systematically expanded in the spirit of the personality cult, featuring a vast central square, a museum complex honouring its namesake and a station of the Karakum Canal. The streetscape is shaped by wide avenues, marble-clad administrative buildings and low Soviet residential blocks.
