Kamina Radio Station Ruins (Togo)

Weather…

The ruins of the Kamina radio station near Atakpamé are the remnants of what was once a technological wonder of the German colonial era. Built between 1911 and 1914, the station was designed as a transcontinental hub to enable a direct wireless connection between Berlin and the colony of German Togoland, as well as German ships in the South Atlantic. With its nine massive steel towers reaching heights of up to 120 meters, it was considered one of the most powerful broadcasting facilities in the world. However, at the onset of World War I in August 1914, after only a few weeks of full operation, the station was blown up by the Germans themselves to prevent it from falling into the hands of advancing British and French troops. Today, only massive concrete foundations, twisted steel beams, and remains of technical buildings can be seen, slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. The site is a powerful monument to global connectivity and the impact of World War I on the African continent. It serves as an important destination for history enthusiasts exploring the traces of German technology in West Africa.
