💡 Tips
- Braunwald is completely car-free. Park your car at the valley station in Linthal and take the funicular railway (Braunwaldbahn) up.
- To get around in the village, there are electric taxis or romantic horse-drawn carriages.
- Ask for the guest card (Gästekarte) at your accommodation. It often gives you discounts on the use of the mountain railways.
- The Panorama Trail (No. 5 on the signs) is an easy, pram-friendly walk with panoramic views of the Glarus Alps, including the Tödi peak.
- Plan your visit according to the weather. On a clear day the view is spectacular, but with low clouds visibility can be severely limited.
🍽 Food
This hearty dish of pasta, potatoes, cheese, and onions, often served with applesauce, is the great meal after a hike. Look for it in one of the mountain restaurants.
A puff pastry specialty, filled either sweet with plum puree or savory with almonds and meat. Available in local bakeries.
Try the unique green herb cheese, a specialty from the canton of Glarus. Buy a piece in the village shop to take home.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The central shop in the village where you can find all the necessities as well as local souvenirs and specialties like Schabziger cheese.
Look for signs for a "Hofladen" (farm shop) or "Alpkäse direkt vom Bauernhof" to buy authentic cheese made in the Alps.
Just follow one of the paths leading out of the village. Within minutes you'll be surrounded by meadows, hearing nothing but cowbells.
Take the Gumenbahn lift up to this viewpoint. At the top, there are spacious paths and a peaceful atmosphere overlooking the surrounding peaks.
Even though it's designed for families, this trail leads through a quiet stretch of forest that's first-rate for a contemplative walk.
Water temperature…
Braunwald is located on a scenic, south-facing sun terrace in the canton of Glarus, high above the Linth Valley. The town's most defining feature is that it is completely car-free; it can only be reached by a funicular railway starting from Linthal. This makes Braunwald a sanctuary of peace and a paradise for families with young children. In summer, the area becomes a hiker's heaven with themed trails like the 'Zwerg-Bartli' path, inspired by local fairy tales. Braunwald is also famous for its lush rose garden, blooming at over 1,300 meters above sea level. For adventure seekers, the nearby Eggstöcke mountains offer challenging via ferrata climbing routes. During winter, the resort provides manageable ski slopes, sledding runs, and snowshoe trails. The pure alpine air and the remarkable panorama of the Ortstock mountain make it a handy destination for wellness and slow-paced recreation.
