Lachen is situated on the southern shore of the Obersee, the upper part of Lake Zurich, in the Canton of Schwyz. The municipality serves as the main town of the March district and is characterized by its privileged location directly on the waterfront. At an elevation of 406 meters above sea level, it holds the title of the lowest point in the entire Canton of Schwyz. The townscape is significantly shaped by the Baroque parish church of the Holy Cross, built with its distinctive twin towers between 1707 and 1711. Lachen is regionally famous for its excellent gastronomy right on the lakeside promenade and the largest marina on Lake Zurich, which is a popular meeting point for water sports enthusiasts. The history of the settlement stretches far back, with the first documentary mention dating to the year 1277. Geographically, Lachen benefits from its proximity to the city of Zurich, making the town an attractive residential and economic location. Culturally, the municipality features, among other things, a marionette museum and regular events at the harbor. The sunsets in Lachen are considered the most beautiful on Lake Zurich, as the bay is wide open to the west, allowing for particularly long evening light.
