Rapperswil Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Rapperswil Castle has dominated the skyline above Lake Zurich since the early 13th century, perched on a prominent rocky spur in the town known as the city of roses. It was constructed between 1220 and 1230 by the Counts of Rapperswil, likely under Rudolf II, to secure and monitor vital trade routes by land and water. After the local dynasty became extinct, the fortress passed to the Habsburgs and was later destroyed in 1350 by Zurich forces, only to be rebuilt by Duke Rudolf IV of Austria. A remarkable chapter in its history began in 1870, when the castle became the site of the Polish National Museum, serving as a cultural beacon for the Polish diaspora for over 150 years. Today, the castle is a major Swiss heritage site, famous for its triangular floor plan, medieval fortifications, and the historic deer park located on the Lindenhof hill surrounding the keep.
