💡 Tips

  • Ride the world's steepest funicular railway up from Schwyz/Schlattli. Book your ticket online on weekends or during high season to avoid queues.
  • The village of Stoos is car-free. Leave your car in the large parking garage at the funicular's valley station.
  • The ridge hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is spectacular but requires sure-footedness. Check the weather and the chairlift operating status before you set off.
  • For the best views over Lake Lucerne, go up to the Fronalpstock in the late afternoon when the sun is lower.
  • Buy a day pass or a combined ticket that includes the funicular and chairlifts to save money if you plan to use the high-altitude hiking trails.

Stoos is a mountain village situated on a sunny plateau in the Canton of Schwyz at about 1,300 meters. The resort gained worldwide fame with the 2017 opening of the new Stoos funicular, which is the steepest in the world with a gradient of 110 percent (47.7 degrees). Its futuristic, barrel-shaped cabins rotate to keep passengers level even on the steepest sections of the track. As the village is car-free, it features an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere and pristine alpine air. The hub for tourists is the Fronalpstock summit, easily reached by chairlifts from the village. From there, visitors enjoy one of Switzerland's most spectacular views over Lake Lucerne and ten other surrounding lakes. The ridge hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is widely considered one of the most beautiful panoramic trails in the region. In winter, Stoos is a popular family ski resort, while summer gives numerous themed hiking trails and mountain bike routes. Dining at the Fronalpstock restaurant allows guests to sample regional products like Schwyzer Alpine cheese on a scenic terrace. Stoos is good for a day trip from Lucerne or Zurich. Access is via car or bus to the Schwyz, Schlattli valley station, where the record-breaking funicular begins its ascent. For relaxation, a wellness hotel in the village provides spa services after a day of mountain activity.
