Sargans Castle
Sargans Castle stands prominently on a rocky spur overlooking the Seeztal and the Rhine Valley in the Canton of St. Gallen. Its origins date back to the 12th century, though the main structures were expanded under the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans during the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle served as a critical strategic point for controlling trade routes between the Lake Zurich region and the Alpine passes. In 1483, the seven members of the Old Swiss Confederation purchased the castle and the county, after which it became the seat of federal bailiffs. The architecture is dominated by a massive residential tower and a late-medieval palace. Today, the castle houses the Museum of Sarganserland, which provides insights into regional mining history at nearby Gonzen and local agricultural heritage. Significant restoration work in the 1980s preserved the medieval substance for future generations.
