Bistra Charterhouse is located in the Bistra River valley in the municipality of Ivančna Gorica. Founded in 1260 by the Carthusian order, it was one of Slovenia's most significant monasteries. The monks followed the strict rule of St. Bruno. The monastery flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries, acquiring rich estates and a library with valuable manuscripts. In the 18th century it was remodeled in Baroque style. After the dissolution of the Carthusian order by Joseph II in 1782, the monastery was secularized and gradually fell into ruin. Today, ruins of the church, cloister, and cells remain. The site is a protected cultural monument and part of the Bistra Valley, a recreation area with hiking trails. The charterhouse was a center of learning and art; its library held over 3,000 volumes.
