Hrastovlje is a small village in Slovenian Istria, renowned worldwide for its exceptional cultural heritage. At the heart of the settlement stands the 12th-century fortified Church of the Holy Trinity, regarded as one of Slovenia's most significant Romanesque monuments. The church is encircled by an imposing defensive wall from the 16th century, originally built to provide protection against Ottoman raids. The interior of the church is entirely covered in late Gothic frescoes dating to 1490, created by the master painter Johannes de Castua. The most famous of these murals is the 'Dance of Death' (Danse Macabre), which vividly portrays the medieval concept of equality before death for all social ranks. Geographically, the village is located in a hilly Karst landscape characterized by vineyards and olive groves. Despite its small size, Hrastovlje is an indispensable destination for art historians and cultural tourists alike.
