Oprtalj, located in the interior of Istria, is considered one of the most pretty small towns on the peninsula. The town perches majestically on a hill and features a sweeping view over the Mirna Valley. Upon entering through the stone city gate, you immediately feel transported back in time. The narrow, cobbled streets, Venetian loggias, and old churches with their frescoes make up the special charm of this place. Oprtalj is primarily known as a center for truffle hunting. In the surrounding Motovun forests grow the precious white and black truffles, which are freshly prepared in the town's cozy konobas. Besides truffles, the region is also famous for first-class olive oil and the local Teran wine. A visit is particularly worthwhile in autumn, when numerous culinary festivals centered around truffles take place. For active travelers, the Parenzana, a former narrow-gauge railway that is now a popular cycling and hiking trail, provides good access to nature. The route leads through tunnels and over viaducts, connecting Oprtalj with other historic places like Grožnjan and Motovun. Oprtalj is the first-rate place for gourmets who want to discover the authentic, "green" Istria away from the coastal towns.
