Škocjan Inlet Nature Reserve (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Škocjan Inlet Nature Reserve (Škocjanski zatok) near Koper is the largest brackish wetland in Slovenia. It represents the remnants of the sea that once surrounded the island of Koper and now serves as a vital sanctuary for numerous endangered plant and animal species. Following a period of severe industrial degradation, the area was successfully restored and protected in the 1990s. The reserve is composed of a brackish lagoon and freshwater marshes, fostering exceptional biodiversity. Over 240 bird species have been documented here, making it a premier destination for birdwatching in the Adriatic region. To maintain the vegetation naturally, Camargue horses and Podolian cattle graze in the reserve throughout the year. A modern visitor center and an educational trail with observation towers allow visitors to experience the ecosystem without disturbing the sensitive wildlife. The reserve stands as a model for successful nature conservation within an urban and industrial context.
