Holy Trinity Church in Hrastovlje (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Hrastovlje is one of Slovenia's most significant cultural monuments, world-renowned for its extraordinary late 15th-century frescoes. Perched on a slight elevation, the small church is enclosed by a massive stone fortification wall with two defensive towers, added in the 16th century to safeguard it against Ottoman raids. The interior is almost entirely covered in vivid murals completed in 1490 by the master Johannes de Castua. Its most famous feature is the 'Dance of Death' (Danse Macabre), a seven-meter-long frieze depicting eleven figures from all walks of life, including a pope, a king, a merchant, and a child, being led toward an open grave by skeletons. This late Gothic motif serves as a powerful allegory for the transience of life and the ultimate equality of all human beings in the face of death. Other notable murals include the cycle of the Creation, the labors of the months, and portraits of various saints. Hidden under layers of plaster for centuries, the frescoes were rediscovered in 1949 and have since been carefully restored. The church is a masterful blend of Romanesque architecture and narrative Gothic painting, offering profound insight into the medieval worldview.
