Sitno Archaeology Site (Slovakia)

Weather…

Mount Sitno is the highest peak of the Štiavnica Mountains and hosts one of the most significant archaeological sites in Central Slovakia. As early as the Late Bronze Age, a massive hillfort belonging to the Lusatian culture existed here, and its earthen ramparts are still discernible in the landscape. During the Middle Ages, a castle was constructed on one of the steep rocky outcrops, first mentioned in 1548, playing a crucial role in defending wealthy mining towns like Banská Štiavnica against Ottoman threats. The castle was demolished in 1703 during the Rákóczi Uprising and has remained a ruin ever since. Beyond its archaeological value, Sitno is recognized as the cradle of Slovak tourism, as the country's first hiking club was established here in 1860. Today, an educational trail leads visitors through various excavation sites, showcasing over 3,000 years of human settlement history on this prominent basalt summit.
