The Slovalco aluminum plant in Žiar nad Hronom was for decades an industrial heart of Central Slovakia and a major European producer of primary aluminum. The history of aluminum production at this site dates back to 1953, a period marked by the intensive development of heavy industry in the former Czechoslovakia. Comprehensively modernized in the 1990s, the Slovalco facility utilized advanced electrolysis processes to transform imported alumina into high-quality aluminum for use in the automotive, construction, and packaging industries. Despite maintaining high technological standards and making significant investments in environmental protection, the company faced insurmountable economic challenges in recent years. Due to dramatically surging energy prices across European markets, Slovalco was forced to completely halt its highly energy-intensive primary production in 2023, triggering profound structural and economic changes for both the town and the surrounding region.
