Krupina Watchtower

The Krupina Watchtower, known as Vartovka, is a historical sentinel tower built around 1564 during the Ottoman wars to protect Central Slovakian mining towns. Positioned on the Straža hill, the tower served as a critical node in a sophisticated early warning system that used light and smoke signals to communicate the approach of enemy forces. Standing approximately 13 meters tall, the tower features a sturdy stone base and a wooden viewing gallery that allowed sentries to scan the horizon in all directions. It played a vital role in the defense of towns like Zvolen and Banská Štiavnica by providing timely intelligence. After the Turkish threat subsided, the tower fell into disuse but was significantly restored in the late 20th century to serve as a public lookout point. Today, Vartovka is a cherished symbol of Krupina, offering visitors panoramic views of the Krupina Plains and the Štiavnica Mountains while standing as a testament to the region's historical military architecture.
