Litava Monastery (Slovakia)

Weather…

Čabrad Castle, historically also referred to as Litava Castle, is secluded within the Krupina Plateau in a protected natural area. It was established in the 13th century, likely around 1276, on a steep hill above the Litava stream to monitor strategic access routes to central Slovakian mining towns. During the 16th century, the site was expanded into a formidable Renaissance fortress, playing a key role in the defense line against Ottoman expansion into Europe. The influential Koháry family acquired the castle in the 17th century and briefly transformed it into a grand residence. However, in 1812, the owners chose to intentionally set the fortress on fire to prevent it from being utilized as a stronghold by insurgent forces or enemy troops. The sprawling ruin complex still features several gates, bastions, and the massive palace walls, standing as a silent witness to its former glory amidst the pristine nature of the Litava valley.
