Komárno, strategically located at the confluence of the Váh and Danube rivers on the border with Hungary, is a city featuring some of the most impressive military architecture in Central Europe. The city is home to a gigantic bastioned fortress system, considered the largest such complex of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was remarkably never conquered by Ottoman troops. Today, the historic twin city is divided between two countries, connected by bridges to the Hungarian city of Komárom. Beyond its military history, Komárno is a crucial center for the Hungarian minority in Slovakia and the seat of the János Selye University. A modern architectural highlight is the "Courtyard of Europe" (Nádvorie Európy), a unique square whose buildings were constructed to represent the architectural styles of over 40 different European regions.
