Považská Bystrica, located in the pleasant valley of the Váh River, is a prominent industrial city enclosed by the steep, forested hills of the Strážov and Javorníky mountains. The undisputed architectural landmark of the modern city is the elegant D1 highway bridge, resting on gigantic pillars, which spectacularly spans the entire city center and represents a masterpiece of engineering. Historically, in the 20th century, the city was world-renowned due to the Považské strojárne, a massive machinery factory, specifically for the production of the iconic Manet and Tatran motorcycles. Above the city, perched on a steep rock, are the pretty ruins of the old Bystrica Castle, a reminder of the site's strategic importance in the past. Today, Považská Bystrica also attracts nature lovers, particularly through the spectacular Manín Gorge (Manínska tiesňava), the narrowest limestone canyon in Slovakia.
