Nitra, picturesquely situated at the foot of the prominent Zobor Mountain, is one of the oldest and historically most significant cities in Slovakia, widely regarded as the cradle of Slovak Christianity. The architectural and spiritual centerpiece is the imposing Nitra Castle, perched on a limestone cliff. The castle is a fascinating complex of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements, crowned by St. Emmeram's Cathedral. As early as the 9th century, the powerful Principality of Nitra flourished here under Prince Pribina, and in the year 828, the first Christian church in the territory of present-day Slovakia was consecrated here. Today, Nitra presents itself not only as a guardian of this invaluable heritage but also as a bustling university town with two major academic institutions and as a crucial center for the Slovak agricultural industry and international trade fairs.
