Nové Zámky, situated in the fertile Danubian Lowland of southwestern Slovakia, is a city with a fascinating military-historical past. In the 16th century, it was constructed as an ultramodern, star-shaped Renaissance fortress with six bastions to protect Christian Europe from Ottoman conquests. Although the original fortress walls no longer stand today, the unique hexagonal layout still defines the street network of the city center. Following severe destruction from bombing raids during World War II, Nové Zámky was largely rebuilt and now stands as a dynamic economic hub. As one of the country's most important railway junctions and surrounded by fertile farmlands, the city plays a key role in Slovak logistics and agriculture.
