Muráň Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Muráň Castle is perched on the Cigánka limestone cliff within the Muránska Planina National Park at an elevation of 935 meters, making it one of the highest castles in Central Europe. Established in the 13th century following the Mongol invasions, it served as a royal stronghold protecting vital trade routes across the mountains. The castle reached its historical peak in the 17th century under Maria Széchy, famously known as the 'Venus of Muráň,' who played a key role in the political intrigues of the Hungarian nobility. Despite its formidable natural defenses, the castle was severely damaged by a fire in the 18th century and subsequently fell into decay. Modern visitors can explore the extensive ruins, which include the reconstructed main gate and remnants of massive fortification bastions. The site provides dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding plateau and remains a significant symbol of regional resilience and medieval power.
