Revúca, hidden in a photogenic valley of the Slovak Ore Mountains and situated right on the edge of the Muránska planina National Park, is a city of enormous significance for Slovak educational and cultural history. In the second half of the 19th century, Revúca became the cradle of the Slovak intelligentsia when the very first Slovak-language grammar school (gymnasium) was founded here in 1862. The historical building of this school is preserved today as a national cultural monument and houses a fascinating museum documenting the tireless struggle for Slovak identity. While historically Revúca was heavily shaped by iron processing, the city is increasingly transforming into a starting point for ecotourism, as visitors use it as a base to explore the untouched nature of Muránska planina, featuring its semi-wild horses and dramatic karst formations.
