Tisovec, hidden in a pretty valley of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the Muránska planina, is a traditional mining and industrial town in Central Slovakia. The city's history is deeply connected to iron processing and later to paper and textile production. A unique technological monument is the historical cog railway from Tisovec to Pohronská Polhora, built in 1896 to overcome the steep terrain for the transport of pig iron, which operates today as a rare tourist attraction using steam locomotives. Architecturally, the Classical evangelical church shapes the large town square. Tisovec is also an excellent starting point for excursions into the pristine karst landscape of the Muránska planina National Park, which attracts nature lovers with its deep valleys and spectacular viewpoints.
