The Jelšava Manor House in the Gemer region is a monumental Baroque-Classical building constructed on the site of an earlier 14th-century water castle. During the 16th century, Jelšava was fortified against the rising Ottoman threat, although the town briefly fell under Turkish control. The present three-winged manor, featuring a prominent inner courtyard, was initiated in the 18th century by the Koháry family and later completed by the Coburgs. As one of the region's most significant administrative and representative centers, it stands as a testament to the immense wealth generated by the local mining industry. Following decades of neglect in the 20th century, the building is currently undergoing a phased restoration, gaining international acclaim for its 'ruin-preservation' approach that keeps the historic character while making the space usable again.
