Muráň Castle Ruins (Slovakia)

Weather…

Muráň Castle is situated on the Cigánka cliff within the Muráň Plateau and, at 935 meters above sea level, stands as the third highest castle in Slovakia. Its strategic location provided excellent command over the mountain passes connecting the Gemer and Liptov regions. First mentioned in 1271, the castle became a significant stronghold in the 15th century for the mercenary forces of Jan Jiskra. One of the most prominent figures in its history was Maria Széchy, famously known as the 'Venus of Murány,' who defended the fortress during the 17th-century anti-Habsburg uprisings. A catastrophic fire in 1760 led to the castle's decline as it lost its military significance and was eventually abandoned. Today, the massive entrance gate and large sections of the perimeter walls remain, offering visitors dramatic views of the Muránska planina National Park area.
