Krupina is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia, situated at the southern edge of the Štiavnica Mountains. The town was granted city rights as early as 1244 and was a significant free royal town during the Middle Ages, closely linked to mining and trade. A prominent landmark is the Vartovka, a watchtower built in 1564 that was part of the defense system against the Ottoman threat; today, it gives panoramic views over the region. Another unique architectural feature is the extensive system of underground tunnels and cellars, which served as hideouts during the Turkish wars and are partially open to the public. Krupina is also the birthplace of the famous Slovak poet Andrej Sládkovič, with a museum dedicated to his life and work in the town. The historical town center, featuring the Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary, reflects the town's former importance and prosperity. Today, Krupina has a population of about 7,500 and functions as the cultural and administrative heart of the Hont region.
