Weather…

Pustý hrad (Deserted Castle) near Zvolen is one of the largest medieval castle complexes in Central Europe by total area. Covering approximately 7.6 hectares, it sits on a forested ridge overlooking the confluence of the Slatina and Hron rivers. The complex is divided into two main sections, the Upper Castle and the Lower Castle, with its origins tracing back to the 12th century. It once served as the seat of the vast Zvolen County and was a vital administrative hub for the Kingdom of Hungary. During the 13th-century Mongol invasion, the fortress provided a safe refuge for the local nobility and population. Its strategic location allowed it to dominate key trade routes leading to the wealthy mining towns of central Slovakia. After the 15th century, the castle's significance waned, and it was eventually abandoned, leading to its current name. Since the 1990s, extensive archaeological research has unearthed massive defensive walls, towers, and palace remains, offering a glimpse into medieval fortification mastery.
