The Kasewe Forest Reserve is located in the Moyamba District of the Southern Province of Sierra Leone and is renowned for its distinctive hilly landscape of volcanic origin. Covering an area of about 12 square kilometers, it was established as early as 1914, making it one of the oldest protected areas in the country. The Kasewe Hills rise prominently from the surrounding coastal plain and are predominantly composed of mafic rocks, which favor specialized flora. The forest is home to rare orchid species and dense stands of evergreen trees that have become rare in the otherwise often degraded region. Geologically, the area provides valuable insights into the tectonic history of West Africa.
